Our vineyards

The wine farm covers a total area of 10 hectares of vineyards, woods, olive trees and fruit trees. All the vineyards are cultivated on plateaus, the cultivation system is the typical Veronese Pergola and the grape can only be harvested by hand.

Since 1978, we have been cultivating in harmony with our land. The vineyards of Durella and Garganega surround the winery, covering 7 hectares, interspersed with woods and rows of cherry, almond, and olive trees.

The Durella grape

Ancient and unknown outside the Lessinia area, it was used in the peasant tradition to produce sour wines, “rabid”, according to the popular appellation. Durella is a white berry variety with a compact, winged bunch and takes its name from the hardness of its skin, which is rich in tannins and has a tart flavour.

Durella is grown mainly on the hillsides of the Alpone and Chiampo valleys, where rocks of volcanic origin predominate.

«However, according to experts, that is to say the elders, the eastern and western slopes of Mount Calvarina are the cradle of the most authentic and straightforward Durello, which improves with age. It is on the plateaus and on the high ground of the great extinct volcano, the Calvarina, that Durello can ripen its grapes in the most favourable conditions».

Ancient volcanoes

The history of the Lessini Mountains began 35 million years ago, when huge bubbles of rising magma began to corrugate the bottom of an ancient sea, triggering an intense volcanic activity. Over millions of years, the elements have profoundly transformed the structure of these soils, making their minerality particularly bio-available to the vines.

Tuff, basalt and other volcanic products are rich in iron, aluminium, potassium, manganese and other oxides and trace elements that are rare in other soils, giving our wines their minerality, flavour dynamics and longevity.

One of the most striking testimonies to the origin of our soils are the columnar basalts of Gambellara, black, long prismatic columns with a generally hexagonal base, formed by the rapid cooling of magma.

Monti Lessini Durello: DOC Area

The map illustrates the Lessini Durello production area that stretches between the provinces of Verona and Vicenza. It is an exclusively hilly area that includes 7 municipalities in the province of Verona and 20 municipalities in the province of Vicenza.

Casa Cecchin is located in Agugliana, a hamlet of Montebello Vicentino, on the top of a hill 250 metres above sea level, on the last south-eastern slopes of Lessinia, the heart of the most historical and productive area.
